Researchers at the Purdue University's Department of Landscape and Horticulture have received new information on the use of LED lights for greenhouse tomato cultivation.

To meet the growing consumer demand for native fresh tomato cultivation in the off-season, greenhouse tomato growers often rely on fill light, and they prefer to use energy-efficient LED lamps as a substitute for high-pressure sodium lamps.

Researchers Michael Dzakovich, Celina Gómez and Cary Mitchell of Purdue University's Department of Landscape and Horticulture published their results in the horticultural journal. The researchers said, " Led lights are becoming a replacement for high-pressure sodium lamps. We are interested in how LED lamps affect the chemical composition and color and flavor of high-value crops."

The researchers conducted three independent surveys on the amount and quality of light-filled tomatoes in greenhouses. The survey shows that greenhouse plants can grow well in natural solar radiation or natural solar radiation supplemented by high-pressure sodium lamps, or in natural solar radiation supplemented with LED light. In addition, scientists analyzed plant responses by collecting color, Brix, titratable acid, conductivity, and pH measurements. “Compared with our guess, the quality of the fruit is largely unaffected by direct IC fill light,” the study authors added.

The study also includes a sensory panel that allows the taster to rank the tomato by using the color, acidity, and sweetness displayed on the objective evaluation scale, or a five-point preference model for color, aroma, mouthfeel, sweetness, acidity, aftertaste, etc. Comprehensive ranking of tomatoes. “By collecting physical and chemical and sensory data, we can judge whether the physical and chemical parameters of data statistics correctly reflect the consumer's fruit consumption concept.” The study author mentioned.

The researchers said, "This study shows that the quality of greenhouse tomato fruit is not affected by two types of supplemental light and self-filling light. Physical and chemical measurements show that there are only minor changes in planting fruit under different light conditions, and there is no significant difference in sensory quality.
